The Golden Rule

February 8, 2016   |   Lisa Martin

Humility of Mary Housing provides housing for
single parent families who do not have a home.

"Let us remember the Golden Rule: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you."

-Pope Francis

The Holy Year of Mercy prayer card on my desk has this list of Corporal Works of Mercy:

  • to feed the hungry,
  • to give drink to the thirsty
  • to clothe the naked
  • to shelter the homeless
  • to care for the sick
  • to visit the imprisoned
  • to bury the dead

The realization sets in that the Congregation of the Humility of Mary, individually and as a whole, have focused on each of these works in various ways for over 150 years.

Some works are more obvious than others such as the CHM sponsored ministries of Humility of Mary Housing and Humility of Mary Shelter. Or ministries such as those of sisters JoAnneMolly and Lynn who do "Works of Mercy" in other cities and states.

The Divine Mercy image is a
depiction of Jesus based on the
devotion initiated by
Saint Faustina Kowalska

Not obvious is the support CHMs give through congregational gifts to the groups listed below. Let me be the one to praise their generosity and dedication to the CHM mission of caring for the poor, the powerless and Earth itself. And in doing so, I hope at least one person might be reminded to follow the golden rule.

"To be merciful means to grow in a love which is courageous, generous and real. It means to grow physically and spiritually. You are preparing to be Christians capable of making courageous choices and decisions, in order to build daily, even through little things, a world of peace." -Pope Francis

In Your ways are peace; May we all hasten to follow Your call to become peacemakers in the here and now.
