CHMs and CHM Associates celebrate Jubilee
Sisters of Humility Jubilee Celebration in 2023
The sisters of the Congregation of the Humility of Mary (CHM), based in Davenport, IA, are motivated by compassion and justice and give themselves wholeheartedly wherever the needs are greatest. The following sisters are celebrating their 2023 Jubilees. Cards may be sent in care of the Sister, to Humility of Mary Center, 820 W. Central Park Ave., Davenport, IA 52804. A special Mass of celebration at Humility of Mary Center in Davenport, Iowa will be held on Sunday, June 25 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Stephen Ebel as celebrant will honor the following Jubilarians:
Sister Virginia Mary Bartholome (Marita) – 80 Years
Born in Great Falls, Montana, in 1923, Sr. Virginia Mary Bartholome entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary in 1943 and made her first vows in 1946. Sr. Virginia Mary studied business at Great Falls College in Great Falls, and received her B.S. in business education from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa. She received a B.S. in library science from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, and an M.S. in library science from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Sr. Virginia Mary’s ministry as a teacher/librarian in Montana included St. Leo High School in Lewistown and Central Catholic High School in Great Falls. She was the head librarian at Marycrest College in Davenport from 1957-1972 and reference librarian at the Great Falls Public Library in Great Falls from 1973-1996. Sr. Virginia Mary volunteered from 1997-2009 setting up the archives in the University of Great Falls library. She is active now in a ministry of prayer and witness and lives at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston, Iowa.
Sister Marian Smith – 75 Years
Sr. Marian Smith was raised in Erie, Illinois and entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary in 1948. He made her first vows in 1951.
Sr. Marian received her bachelor’s degree in education from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa and her master’s in education/administration from Marquette University. She taught school in Iowa at St. Mary in Marshalltown, St. Anthony and St. Theresa in Des Moines, St. Mary in Albia, Lourdes Memorial in Bettendorf and St. Patrick and St. Mary in Ottumwa. She was principal at St. Anthony School in Des Moines from 1968 to 1975 after which she moved to Erie, Illinois, to companion with and care for her mother and continue with her ministry of teaching at the Fulton Public School in Fulton, Illinois. She ministered in Erie doing St. Ambrose Parish work and continues to volunteer there. Sr. Marian is also active in a ministry of prayer and witness.
CHM Associates –
CHM Associates are people called to live the CHM mission without vows and within the context of their contemporary lives. They choose to deepen their baptismal call through prayer, service and community in the spirit of the founders of the Congregation. The purpose is mutual enrichment and sharing of energy, insight and inspiration. Celebrating 50 years as a CHM Associate are Mary Martin Lane and Sue Witte. Celebrating 25 years as a CHM Associate is Con-E Osmers.
